The EaaS model arose as a method of capturing the value associated with energy efficiency improvements. Consumers can save money by upgrading to more energy efficient technologies, but they often fail to do so due to a combination of market and behavioral behavioral failures, which prevent them from acting in their own self-interest. The resulting apparent underinvestment in energy efficiency, compared with what would be expected from a financial standpoint, is a phenomenon known as the energy efficiency gap.
